From the Director of Patient Services:

Beware of Scammers

Scammers try to gain our trust by hiding who they really are. They will pretend to be people in our lives that we know and trust, or to be a reputable institution. They hope this would cause us to let down our guard and click a link, share sensitive personal information, give them access to our accounts, or even send them money. However, we should ponder our steps before we act. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is the platform this person or institution is using normally the way they communicate with me?
  • Does the request sound out of character for this individual?
  • Does this person or institution normally send me links or request access to my account?
  • Do I normally communicate with this person?
  • Does the message sound too vague or too urgent?
  • Is clicking a link the only way to get personal information from me?

When in doubt, a phone call to the person you know or an institution you do business with will normally clear up matters, thus protecting you from scams. Remember that scammers can have a fake website or number appear as a trusted source designed to deceive us into revealing sensitive information or installing malware. In fact, many institutions suggest calling them when you receive emails or calls requesting personal information, PINs, passwords, one-time codes, or a request to move money or change your direct deposit information, since these are signs of fraud.

We have also found that some scammers have claimed to be one of our co-workers.   Please be assured that no one from Sara Companions would EVER ask you to send money, share personal information, or send you an Evite using a link. If you ever get a request that doesn’t feel right, please call your manager or the Director of Patient Services before taking any action.

To help protect yourself, you can put safety and security precautions in place to make it more difficult to become a victim of scams. If you are unsure of how to do this, you can contact the platform that you are using.

Thank you,
